NTPC Embarks on 5GW Capacity Boost, Including 3GW from Renewable Energy, in Push for Sustainability

India’s leading power utility, NTPC Ltd., is on a robust expansion course, aiming to enhance its energy production capacity significantly. In a decisive push towards sustainable and reliable energy solutions, NTPC has announced its plans to augment its installed capacity by 5GW. This ambitious initiative is split into adding 3GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity, underscoring NTPC’s commitment to environmental conservation, and 2GW of thermal power, aiming to bolster the country’s energy framework.

In the financial year 2024, NTPC marked a notable achievement by incorporating 3,924 MW into its operational capacity, which now stands at an impressive nearly 76 GW. Currently, NTPC’s renewable energy capacity is operational at 3.5 GW, with a promising pipeline of over 20 GW awaiting implementation.

Looking ahead, NTPC has charted a vision for 2032, aiming to transform its energy mix significantly. The company envisions increasing its non-fossil based capacity to 45-50% of its total portfolio, which will include a massive 60 GW from renewable energy sources, against a backdrop of a total capacity target of 130 GW.
