In a move highlighting its global sustainability commitment, Bayer AG has entered into a long-term supply agreement for renewable energy with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW), the public utility company of Wuppertal in North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany.
Under the agreement, WSW will provide Bayer with over 120 GWh of wind and/or solar power from German wind and solar parks annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 30,000 households. This will enable Bayer’s sites in Darmstadt, Weimar, Bitterfeld, Bergkamen, Berlin, and Wuppertal to obtain 100 percent of their purchased electricity from renewable sources.
The delivery will be facilitated through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), ensuring a long-term supply of renewable electricity and promoting the financing and construction of new renewable energy generation plants.
Matthias Berninger, Head of Public Affairs, Science, Sustainability & HSE at Bayer, stated, “The agreement with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke is another milestone on the way to reducing our carbon footprint,” highlighting Bayer’s commitment to sustainability.
Maik Eckelmann, Head of the Elberfeld Supply Centre at Bayer, emphasized the longstanding partnership with WSW and the expansion of their collaboration towards sustainable energy supply.
WSW CEO Markus Hilkenbach welcomed the partnership expansion, citing its contribution to driving forward the energy transition and underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals.
Aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Bayer aims to make its business activities climate-neutral by 2030, with 100 percent of purchased electricity sourced from renewables by the same year. Bayer’s reduction targets have been endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative, while adherence to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) guidelines ensures the highest standards for renewable energy sourcing.
