TotalEnergies, in collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA), has initiated the construction of New York State’s largest onsite solar generating and storage system at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport.

The groundbreaking project involves the installation of a solar carport in one of JFK’s long-term parking lots, set to generate approximately 12 megawatts (MW) of onsite power. Paired with 7.5 MW of battery storage, the system aims to alleviate airport energy demand during peak periods.

Significantly, half of the generated power 6 MW will be allocated to power the AirTrain rail link connecting JFK to the wider New York City area. The remaining energy will be dedicated to serving historically disadvantaged households in the neighboring communities of the airport.

Expressing TotalEnergies’ commitment to supporting New York’s clean energy transition, Marc-Antoine Pignon, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables USA, commended the leadership of Governor Hochul, PANYNJ, and NYPA in spearheading this transformative initiative.

The project is slated for completion in phases throughout 2025 and 2026. Upon full operation, the JFK solar carport is expected to curtail carbon dioxide emissions by over 6,000 tons annually, aligning with the Port Authority’s objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its facilities by 2050.

TotalEnergies’ recent milestone of reaching over 1.5 GW of renewable Power Purchase Agreements underscores its global commitment to decarbonization efforts. These solar solutions cater to self-consumption on clients’ sites and grid injection, further advancing sustainability goals.

The commencement of construction on the JFK solar carport marks a significant stride towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure and fostering environmental stewardship in the heart of New York State.
