In a landmark collaboration, Zambian sustainable energy firm GEI Power has joined forces with Turkish company YEO to embark on Zambia’s pioneering Solar PV Plant with Battery Energy Storage. Valued at approximately US$65 million, this transformative project is set to revolutionize Zambia’s energy landscape.
The project, boasting an installed generation capacity of 60MWp alongside a 20MWh BESS (Battery Energy Storage System), is slated for commercial operation by September 2025. This monumental endeavor aims to address Zambia’s power deficit while ushering in sustainable energy solutions.
The initiative was unveiled during a meeting between GEI Power’s Managing Director, Mr. Ignatius Anayawa, Mr. Yasin Duven, Vice President of Business Development at YEO, and their team, who paid a courtesy call to Dr. Francesca Chisangano Zyambo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy.
Mr. Anayawa affirmed that preliminary activities including Feasibility Studies, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Grid Impact Studies have been diligently conducted to lay the foundation for the project’s execution. He emphasized the project’s potential to electrify 65,000 households, alleviate power shortages, and stimulate economic activities in Choma district.
Mr. Duven echoed the sentiment, expressing YEO’s commitment to driving sustainable energy projects worldwide. He underscored Zambia’s potential as a sustainable development hub and pledged YEO’s unwavering support in collaboration with local stakeholders.
Dr. Zyambo lauded the project’s significance in mitigating Zambia’s power shortages and urged expeditious implementation and commissioning. She emphasized the opportunity to leverage Turkey’s engineering and battery storage expertise to establish an assembly plant in Zambia, enhancing local capacity.
YEO, an international Energy Solutions and Technology Company headquartered in Turkey, is poised to propel Zambia’s journey towards sustainable energy with GEI Power’s local expertise. The collaboration marks a pivotal step towards achieving Zambia’s sustainable development goals and underscores the collective commitment to clean energy initiatives.
