Catalyzing Clean Energy Investments: USAID And Standard Chartered Bank Team Up In Vietnam

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam) Limited (SC) have formalized a significant partnership aimed at propelling Vietnam’s journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The collaboration, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), underscores a shared commitment to promoting advanced clean energy initiatives across the country.

The MOU, signed by USAID Mission Director for Vietnam Aler Grubbs and SC Deputy General Director Nguyen Thuy Hanh, establishes a five-year partnership framework. Its primary objective is to facilitate financing for private sector projects focused on advancing Vietnam’s clean energy agenda.

“Through this new MOU, USAID will collaborate with Standard Chartered Bank in Vietnam to facilitate financing for the private sector to develop Vietnamโ€™s advanced clean energy. This partnership is a model to expand collaboration with financial institutions and help accelerate the countryโ€™s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050,” stated USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Grubbs.

Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam) Limited, renowned for its commitment to sustainable finance, views the partnership as a crucial step in supporting clients’ transition towards net-zero goals. “Our MOU with USAID is part of our commitment to support our clients and help them access sustainable financing and achieve net-zero goals. We will continue to work closely with our clients and our partners to provide access to finance to where it matters most and to contribute to the sustainable development of Vietnam,” emphasized Nguyen Thuy Hanh, Deputy General Director, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam.

The collaboration between USAID and SC under this MOU will focus on mobilizing private sector investment in advanced energy systems, including rooftop solar, modernizing utilities, and advancing power trading. USAID’s support will encompass various forms of assistance, including training, capacity development, transactional support, and matchmaking activities.

This partnership signifies a significant step forward in Vietnam’s efforts to transition towards a greener and more sustainable future, with the combined expertise of USAID and Standard Chartered Bank poised to drive impactful change in the country’s clean energy landscape.
