The Indonesian government is steadfast in its commitment to expedite the energy transition as part of its global agenda, focusing on expanding access to clean and affordable energy for all.
Dadan Kusdiana, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), representing the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlighted the imperative of accelerating the energy transition while ensuring equitable access. He emphasized that a just energy transition encompasses not only adopting new technologies and green jobs but also ensuring inclusivity in electricity and clean cooking access.
Strategic efforts are underway, with innovative programs launched to support societal interests. The government is promoting the induction stove program to enhance energy efficiency in households by up to 40%. In the industrial and commercial sectors, the focus is on energy management and appliance efficiency, aiming to reduce energy consumption by up to 20%.
Moreover, in the transportation sector, plans are in place to convert fuel-based vehicles to electric motorbikes, aiming to reduce fuel costs by 50% and vehicle maintenance expenses. The government is providing incentives and infrastructure to support the transition to electric vehicles.
Beyond domestic initiatives, Indonesia is seizing business opportunities in transitioning from a fossil fuel-based economy. Utilizing ex-mining land for renewable energy production and cultivating mangroves for climate change mitigation are among the strategies to cut emissions and explore new opportunities in the carbon market.
International collaboration is pivotal in achieving these targets, with Indonesia and Australia playing significant roles as hosts for key meetings aimed at accelerating the clean energy transition. Dadan stressed the importance of improving existing platforms, encouraging investment, and ensuring inclusive sustainable energy architecture globally.
The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and Mission Innovation (MI) meeting marks the beginning of a new era in clean energy transition, emphasizing partnerships as a crucial pillar. Indonesia actively participates in CEM’s activities, aiming to strengthen its energy transition efforts towards Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. The forum provides a platform for discussions and identifies relevant views to attract investment in ambitious clean energy projects.
