The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has secured a significant contract worth 397 million euros through its “Egypt Green Hydrogen” project in Sokhna. The project, backed by Fertiglobe, Scatec ASA, Orascom Construction, and Egypt’s Sovereign Fund, triumphed in the H2Global auction to supply renewable ammonia to the European Union.
Renewable ammonia, produced with green hydrogen, will be supplied at 1000 euros per ton until 2033, starting with up to 19,500 tons in 2027 and potentially reaching 397,000 tons by 2033. This success underscores Egypt’s strategy to localize the green fuel industry, leveraging its proximity to Europe and favorable conditions for renewable energy production.
SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El Dien emphasized the zone’s commitment to Egypt’s green energy goals and its role in accelerating production and infrastructure development. He highlighted efforts to foster complementary green fuel industries within SCZONE, supported by international institutions.
Egypt’s leadership in green energy was further underscored by the establishment of the National Green Hydrogen Council and supportive legislation and incentives. The “Egypt Green Hydrogen” project, inaugurated during COP27 in November 2022, has already made strides, including the world’s first green ammonia shipment to India in November 2023 and the Eastern Mediterranean’s first green fuel bunkering operation in August 2023.
SCZONE’s initiatives have earned recognition, including the SDG Model Zone Partner certificate from the Global Alliance of Special Economic Zones (GASEZ), affirming its commitment to sustainable development goals.
