Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a key player in the UAE’s water and electricity sector, has opened registration for its Q3 2024 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, set to close on September 13, 2024, in Abu Dhabi.
The auction will allow Abu Dhabi-based entities to acquire CECs, which are crucial for decarbonising their energy use and reducing Scope 2 emissions. These certificates verify that the electricity consumed comes from renewable or clean energy sources, assisting organisations in tracking and achieving their environmental targets.
EWEC is expanding its offerings with the introduction of wind CECs. This new category of certificates reflects electricity generated from the UAEโs first utility-scale wind program, following EWEC’s power purchase agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC โ Masdar in Q4 2023.
Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, highlighted the importance of these quarterly auctions in advancing Abu Dhabiโs clean energy goals. โOur Clean Energy Certificate auctions play a pivotal role in supporting the UAEโs Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. By adding wind energy CECs to our portfolio, we provide organisations with a broader range of renewable energy options to meet their sustainability objectives,โ said Al Ali. He encouraged all businesses and organisations to participate and contribute to a sustainable future for the UAE.
Each CEC is issued in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and confirms that the electricity consumed originates from renewable or clean energy sources. These certificates adhere to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), ensuring the authenticity and benefits of clean energy consumption.
