TP Solar Ltd., a major player in India’s solar manufacturing sector and a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), has announced the start of commercial production at its new 2GW solar cell line located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. This facility is now recognized as the largest single-location solar cell and module plant in India.

The new solar cell production line represents a significant advancement in India’s clean energy efforts and aims to reduce the country’s dependency on imported solar components. The facility, which has a total manufacturing capacity of 4.3 GW, will soon scale up production with an additional 2 GW capacity expected to be operational within the next 4-6 weeks.

Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of Tata Power, expressed enthusiasm about this development. “The initiation of solar cell production at our Tirunelveli plant marks a major milestone towards achieving self-sufficiency in the solar value chain. Our goal is to enhance the accessibility of solar power and support India’s journey toward a Net-Zero carbon future,” Sinha stated.

The Tirunelveli plant, which was commissioned in October 2023, has already produced 1250 MW of solar modules. It features advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, which supports high-efficiency production of solar cells and modules. The investment of approximately ₹4,300 crore in this state-of-the-art facility is part of Tata Power’s broader strategy to lead India’s renewable energy transition.

In addition to this new facility, Tata Power operates another advanced manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, Karnataka, established in 1992. This plant has a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells and has supplied a total of 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells to date.

TP Solar Ltd.’s latest expansion reflects Tata Power’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy portfolio, with plans to boost its share from 41% to 70% by 2030. This move is set to strengthen Tata Power’s role in the global energy transition and support the company’s involvement in both solar rooftop and utility-scale projects under initiatives like PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
