The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund, under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan, has successfully completed the first phase of a solar cell installation project aimed at supporting municipalities across the country. The initiative carried out in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, was fully funded through a grant of 460,000 Jordanian dinars.
This initial phase of the project saw the installation of 29 solar cell systems across various municipalities in Jordan, with a total capacity of 650 kilowatts. These installations are expected to save municipalities around 198,000 dinars annually in energy costs. Among the municipalities benefitting from the project, Shobak Municipality achieved annual savings of approximately 18,500 dinars by installing a 100-kilowatt solar system at its main municipal building, generating 156 megawatt-hours of clean energy.
Mayor of Shobak, Adel Al-Rafayโa, expressed his gratitude for the Renewable Energy Fundโs support. He highlighted that the savings from the solar installations will be reinvested into improving services and infrastructure for the residents of Shobak, which will further boost the local economy and enhance access to essential services.
Rasmi Hamza, Executive Director of the Renewable Energy Fund, explained that the primary goal of the project is to reduce electricity costs for municipalities, enabling them to provide better services to their citizens while promoting sustainable reliance on clean energy. The long-term benefits include significant financial savings and improved municipal services.
The project is ongoing, with a second phase already in the works. This phase will target all 100 municipalities across the country, involving the installation of 163 solar systems with a total capacity of 3,292 megawatts. The second phase, with an estimated cost of 2 million dinars, is scheduled for completion by 2025.
The Renewable Energy Fund has made significant progress over the past nine years, investing close to 100 million dinars in various energy projects across Jordanโs governorates, promoting sustainable energy use and reducing the nationโs carbon footprint.
