Zou Lei, Chairman of China Datang, met with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema at China Datang’s headquarters in Beijing during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit. The two leaders discussed deepening cooperation in energy and power, witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between China Datang Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. and ZESCO Limited, Zambia’s state-owned electricity company.
The MoU paves the way for China Datang to invest in and construct 220 MW of new energy projects in Zambia, advancing the country’s energy diversification efforts. Hichilema expressed gratitude for the partnership, highlighting the 60th anniversary of Zambia-China diplomatic relations. He emphasized the importance of China Datang’s expertise in renewable energy, solar power, and clean coal to address Zambia’s energy needs and support the nation’s sustainable development.
Zou Lei reaffirmed China Datang’s commitment to contributing to Zambia’s economic and social progress. He highlighted the company’s focus on clean energy, green power development, and talent exchange. The collaboration is part of President Xi Jinping’s ten partnership actions for China-Africa modernization, which aims to enhance economic and trade cooperation between African nations and China.
This MoU is seen as a major milestone in China-Zambia relations and a step toward achieving energy security in Zambia through innovation and renewable energy projects. Both leaders look forward to continued cooperation, driving significant achievements in the energy sector and further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
