India’s Renewable Energy Surge: Over 1 Million Jobs Created In 2023

India’s renewable energy sector has achieved a significant milestone, creating approximately 1.02 million jobs in 2023. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the global renewable energy workforce grew to 16.2 million, with India contributing notably to this rise. This report highlights Indiaโ€™s leadership in clean energy and its efforts to generate green jobs, driving both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Among the renewable energy technologies, hydropower emerged as the largest employer in India, accounting for around 453,000 jobs. India ranks second globally, after China, in this sector. The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry also made significant strides, employing about 318,600 people, driven by the countryโ€™s addition of 9.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in 2023. India’s total solar capacity reached 72.7 GW, placing it fifth globally in terms of new installations. Moreover, the solar PV manufacturing capacity in India is on the rise, with module manufacturing expected to grow from 46 GW in 2023 to 58 GW in 2024. Similarly, the cell manufacturing capacity is set to increase from 26 GW to 32 GW during the same period, making India the second-largest PV manufacturer globally after China.

The wind energy sector in India also saw progress in 2023, with the country adding 2.8 GW of wind power, increasing its cumulative capacity to 44.7 GW. This growth provided employment for approximately 52,200 people, with many working in operations, maintenance, and construction. The report further highlights that Indiaโ€™s wind sector has bounced back after years of slower growth.

Other renewable energy sources, such as liquid biofuels, solid biomass, and biogas, also contributed to job creation. The solar heating and cooling sector employed 17,000 people, while the biogas sector created 85,000 jobs, showcasing the diversity of employment opportunities within Indiaโ€™s renewable energy landscape.

Indiaโ€™s progress in renewable energy is also reflected in its electricity generation. In 2023, renewable energy sources accounted for 20.96% of the countryโ€™s total electricity generation, a slight decline from the previous year. However, with the governmentโ€™s ongoing efforts and initiatives, the share of renewables in the energy mix is expected to increase further in the coming years.

Several government initiatives have played a crucial role in this growth. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023, aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production and usage. This mission is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels while creating new jobs and advancing technology development.

The PM KUSUM scheme, which focuses on solar energy in the agricultural sector, and the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which promotes rooftop solar installations for households, are other key initiatives driving job creation. These programs not only promote renewable energy but also enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions.
