HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently met with Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, to discuss collaborative efforts aimed at promoting sustainability and clean energy solutions within Dubai’s aviation sector. The meeting underscored both parties’ commitment to the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future, focusing on integrating renewable and clean energy sources into the operations of Dubai Airports.
Al Tayer expressed the importance of aligning with the directives of the UAE’s leadership to establish a green economy. He emphasized DEWA’s eagerness to strengthen partnerships with government and private organizations that share similar sustainability goals. “Our collaboration with Dubai Airports will enhance efforts to incorporate renewable energy in aviation and improve energy efficiency at one of the worldโs busiest international airports,” he stated.
During the meeting, Al Tayer reiterated Dubai’s progress toward achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These strategies aim for 100% clean energy production capacity by 2050, with an interim goal of reaching 25% clean energy by 2030, which is anticipated to be exceeded.
Al Tayer highlighted DEWAโs significant initiatives, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is recognized as the largest single-site solar energy project in the world. Currently, the solar park has a production capacity of 2,860 megawatts (MW), with an additional 1,800 MW under construction. The completion of the sixth phase is expected to raise the total production capacity to 4,660 MW by 2026, contributing to DEWAโs goal of sourcing around 27% of Dubaiโs energy from clean sources by 2030.
The necessity of adopting clean energy and energy efficiency strategies in the aviation sector was emphasized by Al Tayer as crucial for supporting Dubaiโs sustainability targets. Griffiths echoed this sentiment, stating that Dubai Airports is fully committed to sustainability and operational excellence, aligning with the UAEโs ambitious vision for a carbon-neutral future.
Griffiths remarked that the partnership with DEWA is integral to achieving these sustainability goals, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into airport operations while reducing the environmental footprint and maximizing energy efficiency. “This isnโt just about improving aviation; itโs about building a future where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand,” he concluded.
