Pulse Clean Energy has officially launched its newest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hyde, West of Manchester. The 42 MW / 100 MWh facility is the companyโs sixth project to become operational since 2023, reinforcing Pulse Clean Energyโs commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure that reduces costs, cuts carbon emissions, and strengthens the reliability of the UKโs power system.
The Hyde BESS plays a crucial role in supporting a cleaner energy future by enabling more renewable power to be integrated into the grid. It is expected to prevent approximately 3,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually โ equivalent to taking 1,000 diesel cars off the road each year. Additionally, the facility has the capacity to power over 227,000 homes for two hours, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply for local communities and businesses.
Trevor Wills, CEO of Pulse Clean Energy, stated, โAt a time when the nation is grappling with rising energy costs, while striving to meet ambitious renewable energy targets, battery storage has never been more important. By managing the intermittency of renewable sources to ensure a reliable supply of power, our Hyde BESS is playing a key role in the UKโs transition to a cleaner, more affordable, and more secure energy future. Weโre proud to have successfully delivered this project, providing benefits to households and businesses across Manchester and beyond.โ
Delivering this project required collaboration with key partners, including Electricity North West Limited (ENWL) as the Distribution Network Operator and Network Rail. The project was funded through Pulse Clean Energyโs ยฃ175 million credit facility, backed by Santander, CIBC, Investec, and the National Wealth Fund, alongside equity from the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO). With the Hyde BESS now live, Pulse Clean Energy is another step closer to its goal of achieving 1GW of installed capacity across the UK, helping pave the way for a more resilient and low-carbon energy system.
