Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a key player in the integrated coordination of energy planning, purchasing, and supply, has announced a strategic clean energy partnership with Al-Futtaim IKEA, the leading Swedish home furnishing retailer in the region. The partnership aims to reduce carbon emissions and drive sustainable business operations in the UAE.
As part of the collaboration, EWEC will supply Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) to Al-Futtaim IKEA, covering 100% of the electricity consumed across its four stores located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. These certificates, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), are the only officially recognised instruments in the Emirate that certify electricity consumption is derived from renewable and clean energy sources.
This milestone represents a significant advancement in Al-Futtaim IKEAโs commitment to sustainability, particularly in reducing scope 2 emissions, which relate to indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the consumption of purchased electricity.
The partnership exemplifies the growing trend of private sector engagement in national decarbonisation efforts and aligns with the UAEโs Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. By adopting CECs, organisations can credibly track, verify, and report clean energy usage, reinforcing transparency and trust in corporate sustainability claims.
Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, stated: โOur partnership with Al-Futtaim IKEA highlights the critical role that corporate leadership plays in accelerating the UAEโs clean energy transition. By sourcing 100 per cent of the electricity for its Abu Dhabi stores from renewable energy, Al-Futtaim IKEA is setting a clear example of how environmentally conscious business decisions can support broader national sustainability targets. At EWEC, we are committed to enabling decarbonisation across all sectors by providing access to internationally recognised Clean Energy Certificates that support real emissions reductions and deliver verified environmental impact.โ
Vinod Jayan, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim IKEA UAE, Qatar, Egypt & Oman, added: โThe UAE is well underway to achieving its clean energy transformation, backed by ambitious visions including its Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero 2050 Strategy. Weโre pleased to be partnering with EWEC in further contributing to the nationโs progress. EWEC has already, time and again, proven their dedication to a clean energy future, and therefore we are confident in the success of this partnership.
We recognise how transparency and credibility are non-negotiables when it comes to truly implementing clean energy. And, that aside strong support from the UAEโs leadership, corporate leaders hold a critical responsibility in helping achieve wider missions through smaller, yet consistent actionable steps. Through this agreement, we look forward to continuing to make real progress and deliver verified impact.โ
CECs are issued in units of one megawatt-hour (MWh) and comply with the internationally recognised International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). They verify the ownership and environmental benefits associated with clean energy usage, allowing organisations and individuals to make credible claims and track progress toward sustainability targets.
This collaboration reflects EWECโs broader mission to accelerate the adoption of clean and renewable energy across sectors and support the DoEโs Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for electricity production in Abu Dhabi, while empowering more organisations to align with the UAEโs long-term sustainability goals.
