Green energy major ReNew is set to break ground on a massive ₹22,000 crore renewable energy project in Anantapur, marking a significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey. The project is being hailed as the largest renewable energy (RE) facility at a single location in the country.

Spanning multiple phases, the complex will boast a generation capacity of approximately 2.5 gigawatts (GW), along with a cutting-edge battery energy storage system (BESS) of 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh). The project’s first phase—requiring an investment of ₹14,000 crore—will include 500 megawatts (MW) each of solar and wind energy, supported by a 1 GWh BESS. The second phase will involve an additional ₹8,000 crore, again contributing 500 MW each of solar and wind capacity.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 16, with Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister Nara Lokesh expected to attend. The initiative comes on the heels of the state government’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, launched in October 2024, which has already begun to reshape Andhra Pradesh’s energy landscape by streamlining approvals and introducing lucrative incentives.

According to government sources, ReNew’s new project represents not only the company’s re-entry into the state—after its earlier 777 MW capacity faced setbacks during the Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy administration—but also signals a broader return of RE investments to the region following a five-year lull. No new renewable capacity was added between 2019 and 2024, per a government white paper.

Since the new policy’s introduction, Andhra Pradesh has reportedly attracted clean energy investment proposals amounting to nearly ₹4 trillion. Notable projects include Tata Power’s ₹49,000 crore initiative, NTPC Green’s multiple projects worth ₹2.08 trillion, Vedanta’s Serentica (₹50,000 crore), SAEL Industries (₹6,000 crore), and Brookfield (₹50,000 crore).

The policy aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a renewable powerhouse, emphasizing solar, wind, pumped storage, and green hydrogen technologies. The Central Electricity Authority’s roadmap toward India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030 identifies 86 GW of potential in South India—of which 51 GW lies in Andhra Pradesh alone, including 20 GW in Anantapur, 23 GW in Kurnool, and 8 GW in Kadapa.

ReNew Chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha underscored the company’s long-term vision, stating, “Based on the favourable developments, ReNew is committed to making significantly larger investments in AP and contributing to the decarbonisation efforts by the state as well as the nation.” He praised the state’s forward-looking policies and efficient project clearance mechanisms as key enablers.

This mega project is expected to not only bolster India’s renewable capacity but also position Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of the nation’s green energy transition.
