Iberdrola Expands Clean Energy in Italy with 33 MW Solar Plant and Local Agricultural Integration

Iberdrola, a global leader in renewable energy, has inaugurated its third solar power plant in Italy, reinforcing its commitment to expanding clean energy generation and supporting the country’s path toward industrial decarbonization.

Located in the municipality of Tarquinia, the new plant has a capacity of 33 megawatts (MW) and is expected to produce approximately 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. Equipped with 50,000 photovoltaic panels, the facility will generate enough clean energy to meet the needs of around 18,000 households, while avoiding the emission of more than 15,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year.

The Tarquinia plant also reflects Iberdrola’s approach to sustainable development and local engagement. Designed to supply green energy to Italian industries, the project includes the planting of an olive grove with 1,350 trees already in the ground, creating an additional source of value and opportunity for the surrounding community.

To mark the inauguration, the final 20 olive trees were planted by local primary school students and teachers from the municipality of Tarquinia. The activity is part of “Pianeta Iberdrola,” an educational initiative that promotes the integration of clean energy production, biodiversity conservation, and local development.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by local authorities, including Tarquinia Deputy Mayor Enrico Leoni, as well as the Spanish Ambassador to Italy, Miguel Fernández-Palacios, reflecting the project’s significance at both regional and international levels.
