In a major decision aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing pollution, the Delhi government has approved a new subsidy scheme for solar panels. Residents of Delhi will now be eligible to receive a subsidy of up to ₹1.08 lakh for installing a 3-kilowatt rooftop solar system. This announcement was made after a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, May 20, and is being seen as the largest solar subsidy ever introduced in the national capital.

Under the scheme, citizens will receive ₹78,000 from the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana and an additional ₹30,000 from the Delhi government. This brings the total financial benefit to ₹1.08 lakh. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved the state-level top-up to help make solar energy more accessible and affordable for all households.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, while addressing the media, said that earlier only the central government offered financial assistance. With the added support from the Delhi government, the total benefit has now crossed the ₹1 lakh mark. He called it a historic move for the city and said the scheme will help many people switch to clean energy.

The scheme also includes support for smaller setups. Residents installing a 1-kilowatt solar system will receive a direct subsidy of ₹10,000 from the state government. In addition, people won’t have to pay the full amount upfront. Financing has been arranged through banks, which will offer up to ₹90,000 in financial aid for the 3-kW system. The loan can be repaid in easy monthly installments of around ₹4,200.

Apart from encouraging solar energy, the cabinet also approved new measures to tackle pollution, especially before winter, when the air quality usually worsens. The Public Works Department will operate 210 water sprinklers and 70 mechanical sweepers on Delhi roads. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will also install 250 more sprinklers. Smog guns, litter-picking machines, and automatic cleaning tools will be used to cut down on dust and manual labor. These steps are aimed at improving sanitation and reducing airborne particles that contribute to smog.

Minister Sirsa said that the government is taking action not just for immediate relief but for Delhi’s future. He added that these new efforts would help reduce dust and pollution in the coming months.
