Malakoff Expands Solar Partnership with HICOM Automotive in Major Renewable Energy Milestone

Malakoff Corporation Berhad, through its commercial and industrial solar arm Malakoff Radiance Sdn. Bhd. (MRSB), has signed a second Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with HICOM Automotive Manufacturers (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., a leading assembler and manufacturer of premium vehicles in Malaysia.

The agreement marks the launch of Phase Two of their ongoing partnership and will see the largest single-site solar deployment to date for MRSB, with an installed capacity of 4.22 MWp at HICOM Automotive’s manufacturing facility in Pekan, Pahang.

This follows the successful implementation of Phase One, a 2.0 MWp rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the same facility, which has been operational since July 1, 2022. To date, the system has reduced grid electricity consumption by approximately 7.0 GWh and avoided nearly 5,489 tonnes of CO₂ emissions — the equivalent of planting 261,000 trees.

Construction for Phase Two is scheduled to begin in June this year and will feature an enhanced solar energy solution combining conventional rooftop PV and Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) within the carport structure. This integrated design aims to optimize renewable energy generation while complementing the architectural layout of the facility.

The system is expected to further reduce HICOM Automotive’s reliance on conventional electricity, deliver long-term cost savings, and support the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

Malakoff’s Managing Director and Group CEO, Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib, emphasized the significance of the project:

“This project marks a major milestone for MRSB, not only in terms of installed capacity but also in solidifying our role as a key enabler of industrial decarbonisation and energy transition.”

He noted that with Malaysia’s total energy consumption expected to nearly double by 2050, driven by an average annual growth of 2.0% (according to the International Renewable Energy Agency), industries must adopt more resilient and sustainable energy solutions.

Malakoff, through its green energy division Malakoff Green Solutions, has built a renewable energy portfolio of 173 MW. This includes large-scale solar projects, C&I solar systems, small hydro generation, and carbon-free mobility infrastructure.

The expanded collaboration with HICOM Automotive underscores Malakoff’s long-term strategy to enhance its renewable energy footprint while ensuring national energy security.
