TotalEnergies has announced a new partnership with French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI to advance digital innovation in support of its multi-energy strategy, with a particular focus on low-carbon and renewable energy. As part of the collaboration, the two companies will launch a joint innovation lab where teams from both sides will work together to develop advanced AI-driven digital solutions tailored to the energy sector.

Mistral AI will bring its expertise in artificial intelligence, while TotalEnergies will provide in-depth knowledge of energy production, especially in renewables. The partnership aims to develop a range of new digital tools, starting with an AI assistant designed to support the work of TotalEnergiesโ€™ 1,000 researchers. This assistant will help accelerate innovation in new energy technologies and contribute to the companyโ€™s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.

Other planned applications include decision-support systems to improve the performance of industrial assets and reduce COโ‚‚ emissions, as well as AI-powered tools to enhance the customer experience and help consumers optimize their energy use. The lab will also explore digital solutions to support renewable energy production and efficiency. In addition to these innovations, TotalEnergies and Mistral AI will examine options to build or adopt AI infrastructure that aligns with European digital sovereignty goalsโ€”ensuring that Europe maintains control over critical digital technologies.

โ€œWe are delighted to work with Mistral AI, a leading French player in artificial intelligence. This deal reflects our intention to contribute to the emergence of a technological ecosystem in Europe, and will allow us to explore new opportunities to further embed AI into our activities. AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership was motivated by our pioneering spirit and ongoing search for innovation,โ€ commented Patrick Pouyannรฉ, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.

Arthur Mensch, Chief Executive Officer at Mistral AI, said in a statement, โ€œThis partnership illustrates the positive impact generative AI can have on a sector as strategic as that of TotalEnergies. By dedicating our AI solutions and experts to the R&D effort, the operational teams and, ultimately, the Companyโ€™s customers, we are contributing to improved operations and the digital transition of this global energy giant.โ€

This partnership is a key step in TotalEnergiesโ€™ broader digital strategy, which sees artificial intelligence as a central pillar for improving industrial operations and accelerating its energy transition. While the company has previously used AI in areas such as earth sciences and predictive maintenance, it is now expanding its focus to include emissions reduction, renewable energy development, and smarter energy services for customers. TotalEnergiesโ€™ Digital Factory, now in its fifth year, is home to a team of 300 digital experts who have developed over 100 digital solutionsโ€”60 of which already utilize technologies like machine learning and generative AI. The collaboration with Mistral AI is expected to further strengthen the companyโ€™s digital capabilities and contribute to the development of cleaner, more efficient energy systems.
