THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) for the supply of 184.08 MW of clean energy from India’s first Variable Speed Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), located in Uttarakhand. This agreement is a major step towards strengthening Gujarat’s ability to meet peak-hour power demands while supporting the broader integration of renewable energy into the state’s power grid.
The signing ceremony was attended by several key government and company representatives, including Shri Kanubhai Desai, Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat; Shri S. J. Haider, Additional Chief Secretary; Shri Anupam Anand, Managing Director, GUVNL; Ms. Bhakti Shamal, Joint Secretary; Shri R. K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director, THDCIL; and Shri A. K. Vijay Kumar, Special Officer, THDCIL (formerly Special Commissioner, Investment Promotion, Government of Gujarat). Also present were Shri Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), THDCIL, and Shri K. P. Jangid, Director (Finance), GUVNL.
Sh. Vishnoi said in a statement, “This agreement reinforces THDCIL’s commitment to driving the energy transition through innovative hydropower technologies. With India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, we are offering Gujarat a reliable and green energy solution to meet its dynamic peak-hour requirements. The Tehri PSP stands as a testament to THDCIL’s engineering excellence and vision for a sustainable energy future. THDCIL is steadily advancing sustainable energy solutions through innovative and State-of-Art technologies in Power Generation. The focus remains on reliability, flexibility and supporting India’s clean energy transition.”

The agreement aligns with the Government of India’s broader objective to promote pumped storage technology as a dependable means of delivering flexible power and ensuring grid stability amid increasing renewable energy adoption and fluctuating demand. Other officials present at the event included Shri Sourav Nandy, General Manager (Finance), GUVNL; Shri R. K. Verma, Assistant General Manager, THDCIL; Shri Ajay Vaish, Deputy General Manager, THDCIL; along with various officers from the Government of Gujarat and GUVNL.
