The Ministry of Power has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to develop the India Energy Stack (IES), a new digital infrastructure meant to transform the country’s power sector. The initiative aims to unify various parts of the energy system under a secure, standardized, and open platform. This will help in making the power sector more efficient, transparent, and consumer-friendly.
The India Energy Stack is designed to address current challenges in the power sector, especially with the increasing role of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and consumer involvement. Currently, the sector suffers from fragmented systems that do not communicate well with each other. The IES will act as a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), similar to what Aadhaar has done for identity and UPI has done for payments. It will help manage, monitor, and innovate across the electricity value chain using modern digital tools.
Key features of IES will include unique IDs for consumers, assets, and transactions; real-time and consent-based data sharing; open APIs to connect different systems; and digital tools that empower consumers and allow market access and innovation. These features are expected to enhance the efficiency of DISCOMs, ensure grid stability, and support the integration of renewable energy sources.
The announcement was made by Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, Minister for Power, who said that India needs a strong digital infrastructure in the power sector to meet rising demand and future needs. He stated that the India Energy Stack will be a game changer by making energy services more accessible, secure, and reliable for all citizens.
To test the concept, a 12-month Proof of Concept (PoC) will be conducted. This includes the launch of the Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP), a data-driven application based on the India Energy Stack. The UIP will provide real-time insights and smart energy management tools for utilities, policymakers, and consumers. Pilot testing for this platform will be carried out with DISCOMs in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi.
To oversee this entire process, a task force has been formed with members from the power sector, the technology field, and regulatory bodies. The task force is chaired by Dr. Ram Sewak Sharma, with Mr. Nandan Nilekani as Chief Mentor, Mr. Pradeep Kumar Pujari as Vice Chair, and Mr. Pramod Verma as the Chief Architect. This team is supported by several working groups that will focus on key areas such as technology, distribution, system operations, generation, regulation, and market mechanisms.
The task force has been given clear goals. Within three months, it will define the test model for the Utility Intelligence Platform. In one year, it will prepare a detailed request for proposals and develop the platform further. Additionally, a white paper will be released for public consultation, and a national rollout plan for the India Energy Stack will be created.
This initiative is being led by the Ministry of Power as part of its broader vision to support Indiaโs journey toward a $5 trillion economy and its Net Zero goals. The India Energy Stack is expected to become a strong digital backbone for the power sector, enabling a smarter, greener, and more consumer-focused future.
