SEIA Pushes Circular Economy Vision for Solar and Storage Sector

Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)has released an ambitious new roadmap to integrate circular economy principles across the U.S. solar and storage industry. As solar and storage technologies now make up the majority of new power added to Americaโ€™s electric grid, this strategic plan aims to ensure the industry is prepared to responsibly manage the increasing volume of equipment reaching the end of its service life.

The circular economy is a resource model that separates economic growth from the consumption of finite materials. By adopting this approach, the solar and storage industry can unlock long-term, sustainable growthโ€”reducing dependence on virgin materials, cutting costs through efficiency, and mitigating the risks of a traditional linear economy. Extending the lifespan of products and recovering valuable materials will help the industry scale affordably, boost local economies, and reinforce U.S. energy security.

Titled โ€œA Vision for Implementing the Circular Economy in the Solar and Storage Industry,โ€ the roadmap outlines a path to reduce waste, strengthen domestic supply chains, and extend the life of clean energy technologiesโ€”while fueling job creation and economic growth. โ€œAs the industry continues to expand, itโ€™s important that we implement strategies that extend the life of our products while reducing waste to unlock economic opportunities and a healthier environment. Thatโ€™s what the circular economy is all about,โ€ย said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA president and CEO.ย โ€œThis roadmap outlines the everyday solutions for turning our vision into reality โ€” by providing a concrete action plan to develop national standards, create demand for recovered and recycled materials, and reduce waste in landfills.โ€
