Nxtra by Airtel has announced a major expansion of its renewable energy partnership with AMPIN Energy Transition, signing a new power-wheeling agreement for 125.65 MW of solar-wind hybrid energy. This supply will come through Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected projects, pushing their total renewable energy collaboration past the 200 MW milestone.
The agreement will deliver the additional capacity to Nxtra in two phases via captive solar-wind hybrid projects based in Rajasthan and Karnataka. Nxtra already receives solar power from AMPIN through intra-state open access in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha.
Under the new arrangement, AMPIN will expand its energy delivery footprint to 11 new states and introduce technologies including large-scale ISTS renewable supply and unified green power access from a single Independent Power Producer (IPP).
Speaking on the development, Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel, said, โSustainability is not just a commitmentโit is our responsibility and our opportunity to lead. By powering our digital infrastructure with over 200 MW of renewable energy through our partnership with AMPIN, we are setting new standards for the industry.โ He added that this initiative underscores Nxtraโs role in using ISTS-based clean energy to sustainably power data centre operations, ensuring reliability and measurable climate impact.
AMPIN Energy Transitionโs MD and CEO Pinaki Bhattacharyya noted, โWith this partnership, we demonstrate that through a seamless blend of inter-state and intra-state renewable energy solutions backed by a pan-India presence, we can take any customer through a nearly 100% energy transition.โ He lauded Nxtraโs leadership in the fast-growing data centre sector and its shared vision for sustainability.
AMPINโs ability to offer scalable green energy solutions across multiple states and technologies has positioned it as a key long-term partner for large corporates seeking to reduce emissions and enhance energy efficiency.
The development is part of Nxtraโs broader Net Zero roadmap, now aligned with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company has implemented several interventions to cut down absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its data centre operations.
In June 2024, Nxtra also joined the global RE100 initiative, committing to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. It became the first data centre operator in Indiaโand the 14th Indian company overallโto join the RE100 group.
With this strategic partnership, both companies aim to showcase the role of large-scale renewable integration in advancing Indiaโs digital and environmental goals simultaneously.
