Sungrow, a global leader in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, has announced that all dynamic models of its inverters sold in Brazil have received official approval from the National Electric System Operator (ONS). This milestone confirms that Sungrowโs inverter models meet Brazilโs strict compliance standards and accurately represent their behavior during electromechanical and electromagnetic transients. The approval underscores the companyโs commitment to technical excellence and its active role in supporting the reliability and modernization of Brazilโs electricity grid.
The importance of accurate dynamic modeling gained significant attention following a large-scale blackout in Brazil in August 2023. The event highlighted the critical need for reliable performance of inverter-based resources, especially in scenarios involving reactive power support and low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capabilities. In response, the ONS released Report RAP 0012/2023 in October 2023, launching a structured initiative to assess and verify the models of inverters and power plant controllers (PPCs) to improve the accuracy and robustness of power system simulations.
Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas, stated, “This achievement reinforces our commitment to delivering high-performance, grid-compliant solutions that contribute to the stability and modernization of Brazil’s national power system.โ
Sungrowโs inverters underwent a comprehensive validation process in close collaboration with ONS. This process involved two key stages. In the first stage, known as Level 1 (L1), Sungrow validated its electromagnetic transient model using PSCAD software and a semi-physical controller to ensure close alignment between simulation results and actual hardware performance.
In the second stage, Level 2 (L2), the company developed a model using ANATEM software to simulate electromechanical transients, which was cross-verified with the PSCAD model to ensure consistency across platforms. These simulations addressed critical dynamic events such as switching operations, faults, and interactions involving power electronics.
To ensure success throughout this complex process, Sungrow dedicated significant resources, including a local Brazilian team, global research and development experts, and specialized consultants. The approval covers the full range of Sungrowโs inverter products, including central, string, and modular inverters. With this achievement, Sungrow reinforces its commitment to delivering high-performance, grid-compliant renewable energy solutions while supporting the stability and sustainability of Brazilโs National Interconnected System (SIN).
