Terrasmart, a leading provider of solar racking systems, balance-of-system products, installation services, and project optimization software, has announced the expansion of its in-house manufacturing capabilities to include the production of ground screws for solar racking foundations. Previously sourced from external manufacturers, these components will now be produced at Terrasmartโs facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. This move is a key part of the companyโs broader vertical integration strategy aimed at strengthening supply chain resilience and ensuring consistent availability of domestic solar racking components.
With this expansion, Terrasmart is on track to support nearly 500 megawatts (MW) of new photovoltaic (PV) projects using its ground screw foundations. The new production line is equipped with twelve workstations and a range of specialized equipment, including an induction heater, forge, plasma cutter, stamping press, three-hole punch, set nut welder, and six helical welders. The company is also expanding its ground screw offerings by adding three different sizes to meet diverse project needs. To support the increased manufacturing activity, Terrasmart has invested in workforce development by training its assembly line team in five new skill sets.
Ed McKiernan, President, Terrasmart, said in a statement, “Terrasmart was one of the first providers of ground screw foundations in the U.S., bringing additional reliability and performance to sites in challenging conditions and opening new opportunities for ground-mount solar. Moving domestic ground screw production in-house streamlines our supply chain, maximizing availability for qualifying solar projects to meet domestic content thresholds to benefit our customers, the solar industry, and the wider U.S. economy.”
Yury Reznikov, Chief Sales Officer, Terrasmart, mentioned, โWe are known for our focus on advising on and providing the optimal foundation solutions for every site. Domestic, in-house ground screw production allows us to partner with our customers with even greater efficiency and reliability.โ
Ground screws are an essential foundation solution, particularly in challenging terrains and varied soil conditions where traditional driven piles or ballasted systems may not be suitable. Their versatility makes them a valuable addition to Terrasmartโs comprehensive foundation portfolio. This strategic move comes at a time when the solar industry is placing a growing emphasis on supply chain security amid global trade disruptions and logistical challenges.
Additionally, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has incentivized the use of domestically produced materials by offering an extra 10% tax credit for projects that meet domestic content thresholds for iron, steel, and manufactured products. By establishing domestic production of ground screws, Terrasmart is well-positioned to meet this rising demand for U.S.-made solar components, helping customers optimize both project economics and compliance with federal incentives.
