India has reached a historic milestone by achieving 100 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This marks a significant rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014, reflecting the countryโs rapid progress in developing a strong and self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, highlighted this achievement, saying it is a result of the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and transformative initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He noted that this growth strengthens Indiaโs path towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
The government has been committed to making India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and establishing the country as a key player in the global solar value chain. To support this, a comprehensive set of initiatives has been implemented, including the PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules and measures to create a level playing field for domestic manufacturers. These interventions have played a catalytic role in expanding Indiaโs solar module manufacturing capacity. From a modest 2.3 GW in 2014, the capacity has surged to over 100 GW, demonstrating Indiaโs determination to achieve its non-fossil fuel targets and contribute meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts.
The ALMM Order, issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 2 January 2019, set the stage for this growth. The first ALMM list for solar PV modules was published on 10 March 2021, initially enlisting around 8.2 GW of capacity. In just over four years, this capacity has grown more than twelvefold, crossing the 100 GW mark. This remarkable expansion is also reflected in the number of manufacturers. In 2021, only 21 manufacturers were enlisted under ALMM. Today, 100 manufacturers operate 123 manufacturing units across the country. This growth includes contributions from both established companies and new entrants, many of whom have adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations. The result is a diverse and competitive manufacturing landscape that can meet domestic demand and serve global markets.
The success of Indiaโs solar PV manufacturing is the outcome of collective efforts by the industry, various state governments, and the central government. MNRE has emphasized that this achievement is not the end but a step towards further strengthening the solar manufacturing ecosystem. The Ministry continues to provide policy support, develop infrastructure, and encourage innovation in the sector. It also remains engaged with stakeholders to ensure Indiaโs solar journey remains inclusive, competitive, and future-ready.
With this achievement, India has firmly positioned itself as a global hub for solar PV manufacturing. The increase in capacity and the growing number of manufacturers indicate that India is not only addressing domestic energy needs but is also ready to play a larger role in global renewable energy markets. The crossing of the 100 GW mark under ALMM highlights the countryโs commitment to clean energy transition and the vision of a self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem.
This milestone reflects Indiaโs steady progress in renewable energy, its policy effectiveness, and its contribution to global decarbonization while moving closer to the 2030 renewable energy targets.
