Farmers in Uttar Pradesh are set to gain significantly from the Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM) Yojana, a government initiative aimed at promoting solar energy in agriculture. Under the scheme, farmers will receive a 90% subsidy for installing solar pumps, with only 10% of the cost to be borne by beneficiaries.
The U.P. New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) confirmed that the scheme will help reduce irrigation expenses and make farmers more self-reliant in power consumption. Farmers will be able to install solar pumps ranging from 2 HP to 15 HP capacity, with the government bearing the bulk of the cost.
For instance, a 2 HP pump costing โน2,39,000 will require the farmer to contribute just โน23,900, while the rest will be covered through central and state government subsidies. Similarly, for a 5 HP pump priced at โน3,93,250, farmers will pay only โน39,325.
Officials highlighted that the adoption of solar pumps will allow farmers to save on rising diesel and electricity costs. The pumps will generate electricity directly from solar panels, reducing dependence on conventional sources. Farmers will also be compensated for excess power fed into the grid, based on unit rates set by the electricity department.
Speaking on the initiative, officials from UPNEDA said that the scheme is expected to boost agricultural productivity and promote clean energy adoption. โThis program not only reduces financial burden on farmers but also supports the governmentโs larger vision of renewable energy expansion,โ they stated.
The KUSUM Yojana, being implemented nationwide, is considered a game-changer for rural India, as it provides farmers with both energy independence and cost savings.
