Energy ministers from the 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) convened in Busan on Wednesday for a two-day ministerial meeting focused on strengthening energy security and ensuring stable electricity supply amid soaring demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced industries, South Koreaโs energy ministry announced.
The gathering marks the first time in two decades that South Korea is chairing the APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting, last hosted in Gyeongju in 2005. Representatives from major economies, including the United States, China, Japan, Indonesia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Russia, are taking part in the discussions.
Key topics on the agenda include strategies to secure stable power supplies, enhance global energy security, improve efficiency of energy systems, and accelerate innovation through AI technologies. Officials from the Clean Energy Ministerial, Mission Innovation, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank are also participating to share global initiatives.
South Korea plans to present its โenergy expresswayโ initiative, which calls for the development of nationwide high-voltage direct current (HVDC) infrastructure and a next-generation AI-powered power grid to reduce transmission inefficiencies.
The Busan meeting coincides with Koreaโs hosting of the World Climate Industry Expo, the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial, and the 10th Mission Innovation meeting this week, underscoring the countryโs push to expand international cooperation on energy and climate issues.
