ProfiNRG has secured a turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from T-BESS 1, a battery storage project company initiated by municipal energy company consortium Trianel, for the development of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Waltrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The project will feature a battery storage capacity of 180 MWh on the DC side and 160 MWh at the grid connection point, along with the associated balance-of-plant infrastructure. The facility forms part of the Trianel Battery Park Waltrop (TBW), a multi-phase battery storage development that is planned to reach approximately 900 MW of installed capacity and at least 1,800 MWh of storage capacity once fully developed.
ProfiNRG and T-BESS 1 signed the EPC agreement and a long-term service agreement on 24 July 2026. The formal Notice to Proceed (NTP) was issued on 1 September 2026, with commercial commissioning of the grid connection scheduled for the third quarter of 2028.
The project is being developed in a technically complex infrastructure area where high-voltage connections, railway lines and underground pipelines intersect. ProfiNRG will manage the complete EPC scope, including the design and execution of the BESS and medium- and high-voltage installations, while coordinating the various technical interfaces at the site.
For the battery storage system, ProfiNRG is partnering with BYD Energy Storage, which will supply its latest-generation MC Cube BESS solutions. BYD Energy Storage has delivered more than 135 GWh of energy storage systems across more than 650 projects in over 110 countries and regions. The company delivered more than 60 GWh of BESS systems in 2025, according to the project announcement.
The Waltrop project represents another step in the expansion of large-scale battery storage infrastructure in Germany, supporting the integration and management of renewable power within the electricity grid.
Amanda Zhu, Senior Business Development Manager, Battery Energy Storage at ProfiNRG, said the company appreciates Trianel’s confidence and expects the project to establish a long-term partnership between the companies.
