Zelestra, a global renewable energy company with a strong focus on innovation and customer-driven solutions, has announced the start of full commercial operations at the 50.4 MWdc José Cabrera solar plant in Guadalajara, Spain. The project, developed and delivered by Zelestra’s in-house EPC division, was completed and connected to the grid within just 12 months, ahead of schedule.
The José Cabrera project was developed in partnership with Graphic Packaging, a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, through a long-term virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA). This collaboration is part of a broader agreement that will add more than 100 MWdc of new solar capacity in Spain during 2025.
The José Cabrera solar plant marks a significant contribution to the region’s clean energy transition. During its construction phase, the project supported more than 200 jobs, providing a boost to the local economy. Once operational, the facility will produce approximately 83 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to meet the energy needs of 24,000 local homes. Additionally, the project will help avoid around 11,500 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, underscoring its role in advancing decarbonization goals.
Luis Alvargonzalez, Zelestra’s country manager in Spain, stated,“We are proud to have delivered this significant project ahead of time and under budget, to guarantee the delivery of clean energy for Graphic Packaging to help them meet their decarbonization targets. In the development phase we worked closely with a wide range of local stakeholders and community groups to plan our activities carefully and our EPC team then drew on their wide experience to bring this project to life in record time.”
Zelestra continues to expand its strong presence in Spain, where it manages a pipeline of more than 6 GW of renewable energy projects. Of this, over 1 GW of projects are already contracted, under construction, or fully operational. The company’s leadership in the sector has been further recognized by BloombergNEF (BNEF), which ranked Zelestra among the top 10 sellers of clean energy to corporate customers worldwide, and number 2 across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
