FTC Solar, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has announced the launch of its new 1P Pioneer+ Terrain Following (TF) tracker, designed specifically to address the challenges of building solar projects on complex and uneven terrain. The solution reduces the need for extensive site grading, preserves the natural contours of land, and supports faster project execution while maintaining high performance and reliability. The Pioneer+ TF introduces mechanical articulation that allows for ยฑ10 degrees of adjustability at the center post, along with 1.5 degrees of articulation at each line post. Combined with undulation and reveal adjustments of up to 18 inches, this design enables the tracker to closely follow natural ground contours.
Depending on site conditions, this level of conformity can reduce grading requirements by as much as 95 percent, substantially cutting construction costs and time. A distinctive feature of the new tracker is its integration with FTC Solarโs proprietary PathFinder terrain analysis software. PathFinder processes topographic surveys and project layouts to model site slopes and constraints, automatically balancing cut and fill requirements. This ensures tracker rows align precisely with the existing land surface, helping to avoid costly late-stage design modifications. The outcome is optimized construction efficiency, reduced civil work, and improved permitting prospects through better environmental compliance, erosion control, and protection of natural habitats.
Built as an extension of FTC Solarโs Pioneer tracker platform, the Pioneer+ TF maintains design flexibility with universal torque tubes, module-agnostic rails, and intuitive components that simplify installation. The system is also adaptable to late-stage module changes, further enhancing project flexibility and reducing risk. Commenting on the launch, Yann Brandt, CEO of FTC Solar, emphasized that the new product reflects the companyโs mission to provide smarter and more adaptable solar tracker solutions. He noted that Pioneer+ TF, combined with PathFinder, helps customers address the toughest project sites by enabling faster builds, lowering costs, and expanding the viability of challenging locations.
The introduction of the Pioneer+ Terrain Following tracker marks an important milestone in FTC Solarโs efforts to deliver innovative tracker solutions that align with industry needs. By improving economics, strengthening ESG outcomes, and expanding site development possibilities, Pioneer+ TF is set to play a key role in advancing the solar industryโs ability to deliver projects on diverse and complex terrains.
