At a special ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Brussels, King Philippe of Belgium conferred one of the nation’s highest civilian honors on Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Dr. Birol was appointed as a Grand Officer in the Order of Leopold, an honor reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership over the course of their careers. King Philippe commended Dr. Birol for his outstanding contributions to advancing global energy cooperation and policy development.

He highlighted Dr. Birol’s long-standing dedication to improving energy access across Africa, particularly his efforts to promote electricity access and clean cooking solutions in underserved regions. The King also acknowledged the IEA’s broader role in supporting Belgium and the international community in navigating key energy challenges such as sustainability, security, and affordability.

The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Belgian Energy Minister Mathieu Bihet; European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen; European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela; Count Étienne Davignon, one of the founders of the IEA and the first Chair of its Governing Board; European Commission Director-General for Energy Ditte Juul Jørgensen; as well as ambassadors and senior officials from multiple countries. Their presence reflected the deep respect and recognition Dr. Birol commands in the global energy community.

In his remarks, Dr. Birol expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Philippe for the honor, dedicating the recognition to his colleagues at the International Energy Agency. He emphasized that the award symbolizes the collective effort of the IEA team in delivering high-quality energy data, analysis, and policy guidance that inform global decision-making.

Prior to the formal ceremony, Dr. Birol met privately with King Philippe to discuss a range of important topics, including current energy trends, global cooperation on clean energy transition, and geopolitical developments influencing the energy sector. The conferment of the Grand Officer in the Order of Leopold underscores Belgium’s recognition of Dr. Birol’s decades of leadership and his enduring commitment to expanding energy access, promoting sustainability, and strengthening international collaboration in the energy domain.
