At Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, Masdar unveiled a groundbreaking solution to what it calls “the moonshot challenge of our time” — overcoming the intermittency of renewable energy.
In partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), Masdar is developing the world’s first gigascale 24/7 solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi. Once completed, the project will provide up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of clean baseload power every day, ensuring continuous renewable energy supply around the clock.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi described the initiative as a vital step toward addressing the urgent global demand for stable, round-the-clock clean energy. Spanning an area comparable to the size of Manhattan, the project represents an investment of approximately US$6 billion and will combine 5.2 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). Once operational, it will avoid an estimated 5.7 million tons of carbon emissions annually and contribute nearly one-third of the UAE’s 2030 renewable energy targets.
This landmark development positions Masdar and Abu Dhabi at the forefront of global clean energy innovation, setting a new benchmark for how nations can achieve reliable, large-scale renewable power.
