Sungrow Powers Europe’s Largest Mainland Battery Project With 400 MWh Grid Connection In Vilvoorde, Belgium, For ENGIE’s 200 MW/800 MWh Energy Storage System

Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverters and energy storage systems (ESS), recently announced the successful grid connection of the first 400 MWh of ENGIE’s 200 MW/800 MWh battery energy storage project in Vilvoorde, Belgium. This is the largest project of its kind on mainland Europe and features 320 units of Sungrow’s innovative PowerTitan liquid-cooled battery storage systems. The project is being developed in two phases, with the second and final phase scheduled to connect to the grid by the end of 2025.

Once fully operational, the 200 MW/800 MWh system will provide reliable, clean energy for up to 96,000 households in Belgium while enhancing grid stability. Moritz Rolf, Vice President of Sungrow Europe, highlighted that battery storage is a critical yet often underappreciated component of the energy transition. He emphasized that the Vilvoorde project demonstrates how Sungrow’s technology provides the grid flexibility essential for Europe’s next stage of renewable energy integration.

The Vilvoorde battery project represents a significant step in modernizing Europe’s energy infrastructure in support of the continent’s 2050 sustainability targets. Large-scale battery storage systems help absorb surplus energy during periods of high production and release it when demand peaks, ensuring a flexible and stable electricity supply from renewable sources. By integrating Sungrow’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), the project offers a practical blueprint for combining renewable energy with existing grid infrastructure, helping to balance the grid and address congestion issues.

Sungrow’s PowerTitan units are designed for operational efficiency and quick deployment, with a compact, liquid-cooled structure that optimizes land use and ensures reliable, temperature-controlled operation. These features make large-scale energy storage integration safe, cost-effective, and sustainable.

Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium, noted that the operational batteries now provide the additional flexibility needed to balance supply and demand on the electricity grid. He credited the success of the Vilvoorde project to strong collaboration with innovative partners like Sungrow, which enables faster integration of renewable energy and supports a more reliable and affordable energy system.
