At the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Philippinesโ Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella met with ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) Executive Director Datoโ Ir. Ts. Razib Dawood to discuss a comprehensive and sustainable energy strategy for the ASEAN region.
The discussions focused on aligning the Philippinesโ DOE Chairship of upcoming 2026 energy meetings with the new ASEAN Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation (APAEC 2026-2030). Key areas included securing energy access for people, powering jobs, fostering innovation, and enhancing energy resilience.
Undersecretary Fuentebella highlighted the importance of ASEAN Power Grid (APG) integration initiatives, exploring additional interconnection points, and leveraging opportunities such as renewable energy integration, including offshore wind potential. He also encouraged ACE to consider introducing metrics that address social affordability and accessibility, environmental sustainability, and economic reliability for energy policy makers.
ACE Executive Director Datoโ Ir. Ts. Razib Dawood welcomed the actionable points and reaffirmed the Centreโs strong support for the Philippinesโ upcoming Chairship. He also announced a planned visit to the Philippines later this year to begin drafting the countryโs annual energy priorities.
In a notable development, ACE formally invited the Philippines to participate in the ceremonial handover of hosting responsibilities for the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) from Malaysia, marking a key moment in regional energy leadership.
As an intergovernmental organization representing the collective energy interests of the 10 ASEAN member states, ACEโs collaboration with the Philippines is aimed at driving energy security, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship across the region.
