UAE Breaks Ground on World’s Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project to Deliver 1GW of Baseload Renewable Power

The United Arab Emirates has commenced construction of a landmark renewable energy project that will integrate the world’s largest solar power plant with the largest battery energy storage system (BESS), setting a global benchmark for 24/7 renewable electricity generation.

The groundbreaking ceremony was led by His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs. The project is being developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) in partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

Project Overview

  • Solar Capacity: 5.2 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant
  • Battery Storage: 19 GWh system – the world’s largest
  • Delivered Power: 1 GW baseload renewable energy around the clock
  • Investment: Over AED 22 billion
  • Operational Timeline: Expected to be operational by 2027
  • Environmental Impact: Will offset approximately 5.7 million tonnes of CO₂ annually
  • Job Creation: More than 10,000 jobs

This pioneering project addresses the intermittency challenge of renewable energy and will deliver continuous, dispatchable clean power at a globally competitive tariff. It is designed to serve as a model for energy transition projects worldwide.

Leadership Statements

His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, said the project represents a major leap in redefining renewable energy for the digital era. He emphasized that the UAE is setting a new global standard for clean energy innovation.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, highlighted the project as the most ambitious in the company’s history, demonstrating that renewable power can be dispatched on demand, supporting growth in sectors such as artificial intelligence.

Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, CEO of EWEC, stated that the project will play a critical role in securing sustainable power for the UAE’s future economic growth and technological advancement.

Global Implications

With a target of reaching 100 GW of clean energy capacity by 2030, Masdar is positioning the UAE as a global leader in renewable innovation. This groundbreaking development is expected to act as a blueprint for countries seeking reliable, large-scale renewable baseload power solutions.
