NLC India Wins 275 MW/550 MWh BESS Project In Gujarat

NLC India Limited has announced a significant development in the energy storage sector through its wholly owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL). The company confirmed on September 4, 2026, through a regulatory filing with the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited, that NIRL has successfully won a major standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Gujarat.

NIRL emerged as the successful bidder in a competitive tariff-based tender floated by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL). The tender was aimed at developing standalone BESS projects to support Gujarat’s growing power requirements and strengthen grid reliability.

Under the awarded project, NIRL will develop a 275 MW/550 MWh standalone BESS facility in Gujarat. GUVNL has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to NIRL, formally confirming the company as the successful bidder and granting it the opportunity to execute and operate the energy storage project.

The project is expected to play an important role in supporting the integration of renewable energy into Gujarat’s power system. Large-scale battery storage can help manage fluctuations in renewable generation, improve grid stability and provide greater flexibility in power supply.

The latest achievement forms part of NLC India’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy and energy storage portfolio. The Navratna company, operating under the Ministry of Coal, is increasingly focusing on clean energy technologies as India accelerates its transition toward a more sustainable power sector.

The project also adds to NLC India’s milestones as the company marks 70 years of operations and strengthens its role in India’s evolving clean energy landscape.
