Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar), a leading global clean energy developer, has been awarded two major solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in Saudi Arabia, with a combined capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). The projects were allocated under the sixth round of bidding in the Kingdom’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).
The Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects include the 1,400 MW Najran solar plant and the 600 MW Ad Darb facility. Both will be developed under a build, own, and operate (BOO) model, with a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The Ad Darb project, located in Jizan Province, is scheduled to commence commercial operations in late 2027, while the Najran project, based in Najran Province, is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2028.
Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, stated that the company is proud to support Saudi Arabia in achieving its Vision 2030 renewable energy goals, highlighting that these projects mark a major expansion of Masdar’s presence in the Kingdom.
SPPC, the Principal Buyer responsible for predevelopment studies, tendering, and power purchase agreements, has so far awarded 43.2 GW of total capacity, with 12.3 GW already connected to the national grid.
Masdar has consistently secured the largest capacity in SPPC tenders for three consecutive years, with ongoing projects including the 1,100 MW Al Henakiyah plant, expected to commence operations next year, and the 2,000 MW Al Sadawi project, slated for 2027.
Founded in 2006, Masdar has a global renewable energy portfolio exceeding 51 GW, with a target to expand to 100 GW by 2030. The company established its Saudi Arabia office in 2022 to support the nation’s clean energy ambitions. Its operational projects in the Kingdom include the 300 MW Jeddah Solar Power Plant and the 400 MW Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm, the latter being Saudi Arabia’s first and the largest wind project in the Middle East.
