Alight, a leading Nordic solar developer and independent power producer, has received a multi-million-euro grant from the European Commissionโ€™s Innovation Fund 2024 for its large-scale solar project in Loviisa, Finland. The project, co-developed with Finnish renewable energy company 3Flash, was selected through a highly competitive process that attracted 373 applicants, of which only 61 projects were awarded funding. The grant underscores Alightโ€™s dedication to driving Europeโ€™s renewable energy transition through innovative and scalable solar solutions.

The upcoming solar park in Loviisa will have an installed capacity of approximately 120 MW, complemented by a 45 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The project spans about 225 hectares in southeastern Finland and integrates agrivoltaics โ€” combining solar power generation with agricultural activities. Using artificial intelligence and advanced solar trackers, the design aims to optimize both electricity production and crop yield, creating a balance between clean energy and sustainable land use.

The Innovation Fundโ€™s decision recognizes the projectโ€™s pioneering approach and its strong alignment with the European Unionโ€™s climate and sustainability objectives. Once operational, the Loviisa solar park is expected to generate roughly 155 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to power around 31,000 Finnish households. In addition to contributing to Finlandโ€™s clean energy capacity, the project will enhance grid flexibility and support regional energy security through its integrated storage system.

The project is currently progressing through the zoning process, with applications expected to be submitted soon. Subject to successful permitting and grid connection approvals, construction could begin in 2026. Alight expects to sign the grant agreement with the European Commission by March 2026, while discussions for a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a corporate offtaker are already underway.

Commenting on the recognition, Warren Campbell, CEO of Alight, said, โ€œWe are honored that our project has been recognized by the European Commission as a leading example of innovation in renewable energy. This solar park, with its integrated battery storage system, will not only provide clean power and flexibility to the Finnish grid but also demonstrate how solar can co-exist with and enhance agricultural productivity. The Innovation Fund grant is a testament to the expertise of both Alight and 3Flash, and our shared vision of a more sustainable energy future.โ€

Sari Multala, Finlandโ€™s Minister of the Environment and Climate, welcomed the achievement, stating, โ€œItโ€™s great to see Finnish projects succeeding once again in the EU Innovation Fund call. As we move toward a fossil-free economy, initiatives like this are essential for driving innovation and supporting Europeโ€™s net-zero goals. This success highlights Finlandโ€™s technological strength and ability to deliver impactful solutions to global environmental challenges.โ€
