Alight, a leading Nordic solar developer and independent power producer, has received a multi-million-euro grant from the European Commission’s Innovation Fund 2024 for its large-scale solar project in Loviisa, Finland. The project, co-developed with Finnish renewable energy company 3Flash, was selected through a highly competitive process that attracted 373 applicants, of which only 61 projects were awarded funding. The grant underscores Alight’s dedication to driving Europe’s renewable energy transition through innovative and scalable solar solutions.
The upcoming solar park in Loviisa will have an installed capacity of approximately 120 MW, complemented by a 45 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The project spans about 225 hectares in southeastern Finland and integrates agrivoltaics — combining solar power generation with agricultural activities. Using artificial intelligence and advanced solar trackers, the design aims to optimize both electricity production and crop yield, creating a balance between clean energy and sustainable land use.
The Innovation Fund’s decision recognizes the project’s pioneering approach and its strong alignment with the European Union’s climate and sustainability objectives. Once operational, the Loviisa solar park is expected to generate roughly 155 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to power around 31,000 Finnish households. In addition to contributing to Finland’s clean energy capacity, the project will enhance grid flexibility and support regional energy security through its integrated storage system.
The project is currently progressing through the zoning process, with applications expected to be submitted soon. Subject to successful permitting and grid connection approvals, construction could begin in 2026. Alight expects to sign the grant agreement with the European Commission by March 2026, while discussions for a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a corporate offtaker are already underway.
