Downing Renewable Developments (DRD) has received planning permission for its Fair Park solar farm and battery energy storage system near Carland Cross in Cornwall. The approval follows a successful appeal, allowing the company to move forward with a project capable of delivering up to 49.9MW of solar energy. The Fair Park development is designed to operate for 30 years and combines renewable power generation with continued agricultural use. Sheep grazing will remain active across the site, ensuring that farming and clean energy production can coexist.
DRD has also committed to substantial biodiversity improvements, including the planting of new hedgerows, the creation of wildflower meadows, and broader habitat enhancements that exceed standard planning requirements. These measures support both national and Cornwall Net Zero goals. To safeguard the local environment, DRD has outlined a comprehensive set of protections for wildlife, nearby watercourses, and the adjacent Site of Special Scientific Interest. These plans ensure that the project not only meets regulatory expectations but also preserves the ecological character of the surrounding area.
A key part of the proposal is DRDโs community benefit package. As part of this initiative, the company will offer free solar rooftop installations to residents living near the development. This program is intended to help local households directly reduce their energy costs while contributing to the regionโs transition to cleaner power. The Fair Park project adds to DRDโs existing pipeline of 6GW of renewable energy developments across the UK. It is expected to generate local employment opportunities during the construction phase and provide additional support to nearby businesses.
DRD has also confirmed that public rights of way will be maintained and that the project team will work to minimize disruption for local residents and community venues throughout the development process. Tony Gannon, Head of Downing Renewable Developments, welcomed the approval and emphasized the projectโs importance. He noted that the Fair Park solar farm will play a meaningful role in helping the UK and Cornwall meet their Net Zero ambitions. He also highlighted the value of the community benefits program, which will give residents closest to the site access to lower-cost energy through free domestic solar rooftop installations.
