Indian Railways has announced the completion of Indiaโ€™s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train-set, marking a major milestone in the countryโ€™s clean mobility transition. The pilot project, developed under the specifications of the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO), aims to demonstrate hydrogen-based rail technology on the Indian network.

According to a written reply by Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the hydrogen train-set has been fully manufactured, and work is underway to establish a dedicated green hydrogen production plant in Jind. The plant will generate hydrogen through the electrolysis process, a critical pathway for green hydrogen production.

The newly developed train-set stands out globally as the worldโ€™s longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered broad-gauge train, featuring 10 coaches and a total power capacity of 2400 kW. It includes two Driving Power Cars of 1200 kW each, supported by eight passenger coaches. Designed and developed entirely in India, the project reinforces the governmentโ€™s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The train operates with zero carbon dioxide emissions, releasing only water vapour, and represents a significant step forward in next-generation fuel technology for the railway sector.

Officials noted that since both the train-set and the associated hydrogen infrastructure have been developed on a pilot basis, comparing costs with existing traction systems would not provide an accurate benchmark at this stage. However, the project underscores Indian Railwaysโ€™ commitment to adopting alternative, environment-friendly propulsion technologies to support a cleaner and more sustainable transport ecosystem.

The announcement reflects Indian Railwaysโ€™ continued efforts to lead the nationโ€™s green energy transformation with innovative, home-grown technological advancements.
