Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has reported the consumption of 1.57 billion units of renewable energy in FY25, marking a key milestone in its 2030 decarbonisation roadmap and reinforcing its role in India’s low-carbon manufacturing transition.

The company said the increased use of green power has resulted in an 8.96% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity since FY21. Vedanta Aluminium has also strengthened its long-term strategy to source around 1,500 MW of renewable power, alongside scaling energy-efficiency initiatives across its operations.

During FY25, the company expanded its renewable energy portfolio through long-term power purchase agreements, positioning clean energy as a central element of its operational strategy. It has also advanced energy conservation and process optimisation efforts through digital interventions and resource-efficiency measures, including enhanced waste-heat recovery systems, improved boiler and turbine performance, deployment of energy-efficient technologies, and real-time monitoring to reduce plant-level energy consumption.

Vedanta Aluminium has implemented several high-impact conservation initiatives, including a patented potlining technology that delivers energy savings of around 200 kWh per tonne of aluminium while improving smelter efficiency. Through a combination of sustainability measures, the company has achieved energy savings of 378 million units, further lowering overall energy intensity.

To strengthen its long-term climate strategy, Vedanta Aluminium formalised a partnership with PwC India in 2025 to scale decarbonisation, water positivity and biodiversity initiatives across its key locations. The company has also established dedicated “Communities of Practice” covering carbon, water, waste, biodiversity and tailings to ensure consistent implementation and performance tracking. Under its 2030 targets, Vedanta Aluminium aims for 30% of its product portfolio to comprise low-carbon aluminium, supported by the expansion of its Restora and Restora Ultra product lines.

Commenting on the development, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said the company is focused on transforming aluminium production in India by embedding clean energy and efficiency at the core of its operations, while supporting the country’s green manufacturing ambitions.

To promote energy responsibility across its workforce, Vedanta Aluminium has rolled out comprehensive energy-efficiency training programmes aligned with global best practices and international standards such as ISO 50001 for energy management.

Additional decarbonisation initiatives include increased use of biomass briquettes for co-firing at BALCO and Vedanta Lanjigarh, an MoU with GAIL to supply natural gas for cast house operations at Vedanta Jharsuguda, and the deployment of 142 electric forklifts, creating what the company said is India’s largest electric forklift fleet. The company has also invested INR 1,411 million in community development programmes focused on health, education, water access and livelihoods.

The announcement coincided with National Energy Conservation Day, observed annually on December 14 by the Government of India. Vedanta Aluminium said its renewable energy adoption, efficiency upgrades and sustainability disclosures are aligned with India’s broader energy-efficiency and clean-industry objectives, contributing to a more sustainable industrial ecosystem.
