Vedanta Limited, a diversified conglomerate spanning energy-transition metals, oil and gas, critical minerals, power and technology, has reiterated its commitment to supporting India’s clean-energy transition on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day.
The company’s decarbonisation strategy is anchored around four key levers—expansion of renewable energy, adoption of low-carbon fuels, improvements in energy and process efficiency, and the use of carbon offsets. Till November of FY26, Vedanta sourced approximately 2.58 billion units of renewable energy, resulting in the mitigation of nearly 2 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions, comparable to taking about 410,000 vehicles off Indian roads for a year.
Since FY21, Vedanta has mitigated more than 28 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, an impact equivalent to the annual carbon absorption capacity of over one billion mature trees. In FY25, the company further reinforced its decarbonisation roadmap by investing around USD 170 million (approximately INR 1,500 crore) towards its net-zero initiatives.
In FY26, Vedanta has undertaken over 30 energy-saving and decarbonisation projects across its operations. These initiatives include enhanced waste-heat recovery, periodic overhauling of equipment, and optimisation of energy consumption through advanced pot controller technologies. Collectively, these projects are expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 150,000 tonnes annually, equivalent to the absorption capacity of around seven million trees.
Aligned with the Government of India’s ‘Waste to Wealth’ mission and focus on circularity, Vedanta has also increased the use of biofuels derived from biomass and agricultural residue. In 2025, the company utilised about 182 kilotonnes of biomass across its operations, mitigating over 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Vedanta said it continues to advance low-carbon production practices to support the clean-energy ecosystem, producing transition metals and critical minerals essential for renewable energy technologies. Since 2021, the company has reduced its carbon intensity by nearly 30 percent.
During its ongoing ‘Energy Conservation Week’, Vedanta reported energy savings of more than 33,000 megawatt hours across its zinc and ferrochrome operations. Vedanta Aluminium is also expanding its production capacity from 2.4 million tonnes per annum to 3.1 MTPA, with its low-carbon ‘Restora’ aluminium increasingly used in solar energy, electric vehicles, packaging and infrastructure. Hindustan Zinc, meanwhile, is progressing with its 2x Growth Plan across zinc, lead and silver, offering its low-carbon ‘EcoZen’ zinc, which is around 75 percent less carbon intensive for infrastructure applications.
To mark National Energy Conservation Week, Vedanta’s group companies undertook several awareness initiatives. Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta Power promoted greener commuting practices such as carpooling and ‘No Vehicle Day’, while Vedanta Aluminium organised a cycle rally and school competitions in Jharsuguda, Odisha. ESL Steel Limited and FACOR also conducted energy-saving awareness sessions for employees throughout the week.
Vedanta stated that it continues to strengthen its multi-metals and energy capabilities in line with India’s self-reliance goals. As the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, the fourth-largest producer of silver globally, and a leading aluminium producer, the company plays a significant role in supplying materials critical to the global energy transition.
The company reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, while continuing its social impact initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods in underserved regions.
