PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator, has recommended NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon to develop a critical energy infrastructure project under its 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan. The proposed project involves constructing a roughly 220-mile, 765-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage transmission line designed to enhance reliable, affordable electricity for communities in Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia while stimulating regional economic growth.

The transmission line will connect to substations supplying power to residents and businesses, supporting a more resilient and efficient grid.

John Ketchum, Chairman and CEO of NextEra Energy, said, โ€œTogether with Exelon, we’re delivering a stronger, more resilient grid that improves access to low-cost energy for millions of families and businesses across Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This critical project will power communities for decades to come, and we are committed to working closely with local communities along the proposed line to ensure its many benefits.โ€

Exelon President and CEO Calvin Butler added, โ€œOur collaboration marks a pivotal moment for our region’s energy future. This project will ensure reliable, affordable power, strengthen the grid, and drive economic growth, while we remain committed to working hand-in-hand with local communities.โ€

Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) emphasized the projectโ€™s strategic importance, stating, โ€œPennsylvania has an extraordinary opportunity to lead the energy and AI revolution. This project will deliver reliable power, stabilize electricity prices, create jobs, and support economic growth across the Commonwealth.โ€

The proposed 765-kV line offers multiple advantages:

  • Transfers 2โ€“3 times more power than traditional 500-kV lines while reducing transmission losses by 50%.
  • Improves resilience during peak demand, helping lower electricity costs.
  • Requires fewer towers than equivalent transmission structures, minimizing environmental impact.
  • Facilitates approximately 7 gigawatts (GW) of power, supporting industrial investments and creating thousands of permanent jobs.

The transmission line aligns with Pennsylvaniaโ€™s $92 billion investment in new power generation and complements West Virginia Governor Jim Morriseyโ€™s 50 GW by 2050 energy plan, including recent $4.2 billion investment commitments to enhance the stateโ€™s energy infrastructure and workforce.

The PJM Board is expected to hold its final vote on the project in early 2026. NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon plan to continue working closely with stakeholders to bring the transmission line into service, aiming to transform energy delivery and economic opportunities across the region.
