Blueleaf Energy, in partnership with Universal Peak Sdn. Bhd., has been selected by Malaysia’s Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) to develop a 100 MW/400 MWh utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Peninsular Malaysia.

The project will be developed under Malaysia’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage System programme, MyBeST, a competitive bidding initiative that represents the largest deployment of grid-connected BESS capacity in Peninsular Malaysia to date. The consortium will build, own and operate the project, which is targeted for commissioning in 2027.

According to the companies, the BESS project will support grid stability and reliability while accelerating Malaysia’s transition towards a low-carbon energy system. The MyBeST programme is a key pillar of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to achieve 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050. Battery storage is expected to play a critical role by providing services such as frequency regulation, peak shaving and energy shifting, enabling greater integration of solar power and reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-based peaking plants.

Raghuram Natarajan, Chief Executive Officer of Blueleaf Energy, said the selection reflects the strength of the partnership with Universal Peak and the consortium’s capability to deliver large-scale, sustainable energy infrastructure. He added that the combination of Blueleaf Energy’s global experience in renewable energy development and financing with Universal Peak’s local engineering expertise positions the project to deliver long-term benefits to Malaysia’s energy system.

Datuk Ir. Raj Kumar R Gopal Pillai, Managing Director of Universal Peak, said the award highlights the effectiveness of the consortium’s collaborative approach and marks an important step in enhancing grid resilience and advancing clean energy adoption in the country.

The Blueleaf Energy–Universal Peak consortium, bidding under the entities BLE C&I Projects 2 Pte Ltd and Universal Peak Sdn. Bhd., was selected following a competitive process that attracted 28 bids, of which four were approved. The Energy Commission said the selected projects will deploy different battery technologies, enabling performance assessment under Malaysia’s grid requirements and climatic conditions.
