European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen Visited Portugal from January 30 to February 2 to engage in high-level discussions on energy security, grid resilience, and affordable housing policies.
Amid recent storm-related power disruptions in parts of the country, Commissioner Jørgensen will visit the control centre of national electricity grid operator REN alongside Portugal’s Minister for Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho and Secretary of State for Energy Jean Barroca. The visit comes as the European Commission prepares a revision of the EU’s energy security framework, expected later this year, and advances proposals under the European Grids Package aimed at strengthening energy infrastructure, lowering power costs, and boosting Europe’s energy independence.
As part of his European Affordable Housing Tour, the Commissioner will also meet Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas. The engagements follow the presentation of the EU’s first-ever European Affordable Housing Plan in December, designed to address the growing housing crisis across the bloc.
The visit includes a stakeholder roundtable hosted by the Lisbon Mayor focusing on youth housing affordability, housing finance mechanisms, innovative housing models, and balancing tourism accommodation with residential needs. The session will conclude with a joint press briefing ,followed by a visit to the Lote 10 housing development project, which will deliver 476 affordable homes supported by NextGenerationEU funding.
Commissioner Jørgensen will hold bilateral talks with Minister Carvalho and co-chair a roundtable with energy stakeholders on energy affordability and grid development.
