Sibanye-Stillwater has signed a 10-year flexible power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy for the supply of wheeled renewable energy to its South African operations.
Under the agreement, Etana Energy will supply 600 GWh of renewable electricity per yearโequivalent to approximately 220MWโfrom a diversified portfolio of solar and wind projects. The electricity will be transmitted through South Africaโs national grid to power Sibanye-Stillwaterโs gold and platinum group metal (PGM) operations.
The agreement has been structured to align with Sibanye-Stillwaterโs operational requirements and life-of-mine profile in South Africa, while integrating with its existing long-term bilateral PPAs. The renewable supply is expected to support the companyโs decarbonisation strategy and reduce electricity costs.
Once operational from late 2027, the project is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 648,000 tonnes of COโ equivalent per year from 2028 onwards.
Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Richard Stewart said the agreement adds a material 220MWโrepresenting more than 35% of the companyโs renewable energy targetโand advances its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. He noted that the deal reinforces the companyโs sustainability commitments while providing a more cost-effective energy supply for its South African operations.
Etana Energy CEO Evan Rice described the partnership as a strategic milestone, highlighting the role of large power users in enabling new clean energy generation capacity in South Africa through long-term offtake commitments. He added that the agreement was designed with contractual flexibility to mitigate long-term risk and align with the customerโs operational outlook.
Etana Energy has now signed PPAs with more than 20 large electricity users. The Sibanye-Stillwater agreement marks the companyโs third long-term renewable energy PPA with major mining firms, following similar wheeled electricity supply agreements concluded in 2024 with Tharisa Minerals and Petra Diamonds.
