Natura Energy has achieved an important financial milestone for its new solar power project in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The company recently confirmed the financial close of Phase 1A of the Parsons Power Park, a 31-megawatt peak solar photovoltaic project located in Nelson Mandela Bay. This development marks a significant step forward for the independent power producer and its partners as they move closer to delivering clean electricity to the region.

The Parsons Power Park project was developed by Natura Energy from its early greenfield stage and taken through the process required to reach financial bankability. During the development journey, the company worked closely with its co-sponsor, Raw Renewables. Their collaboration helped the project meet financial, regulatory, and technical requirements. Because of its structure and scale, the project has become one of the most notable private sector renewable energy investments in the region.

One of the key aspects that strengthens the project’s financial stability is the long-term power purchase agreement signed with POWERX. The agreement runs for 25 years and guarantees a steady revenue stream for the solar facility once it becomes operational. This long-term contract provides confidence to investors and lenders supporting the project.

The financial structure of the project was arranged with the support of Standard Bank, which acted as both the lender and financial arranger. In addition, several advisors and partners contributed to the development process. Yellow Door Energy was among the organizations that provided support to ensure the project met all technical and legal requirements before reaching financial close.

The Parsons Power Park is expected to become the largest utility-scale power plant connected directly to the electrical grid of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Local authorities played a vital role in the process by granting approvals and working closely with the developers to facilitate the project’s progress.

With the financing phase now complete, construction is expected to begin soon. The engineering, procurement, and construction work will be handled by Alensy Energy Solutions. Once the solar plant is operational, it will deliver clean electricity to the municipal grid, helping reduce carbon emissions in the region.

The project also supports South Africa’s broader efforts to strengthen energy security and expand renewable energy capacity. By adding new solar generation to the Eastern Cape’s power supply, the Parsons Power Park will contribute to building a more reliable and sustainable energy system for the future.
