Sungrow has partnered with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company The Green Way Solar to deploy a hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) for The Peech Hotel in Melrose North, Johannesburg, enhancing the boutique hotel’s energy resilience and sustainability.
Completed in June 2026, the project integrates a Sungrow SG125CX inverter with a PowerStack 255CS energy storage system, providing 125 kW of solar generation capacity and 257 kWh of battery energy storage.
The hybrid system has been designed to address the hotel’s unique energy consumption profile, where peak electricity demand occurs during the morning and evening, outside peak solar generation hours. Excess solar energy generated during the day is stored in the battery system and discharged during high-demand periods, ensuring a reliable electricity supply for essential hotel operations.
The solution combines solar PV, battery energy storage, municipal grid electricity, and diesel backup generation, providing multiple energy sources to improve operational flexibility while reducing dependence on conventional power supplies.
According to Sungrow, Johannesburg’s high solar irradiation, with around 300 sunny days annually, enables the hotel to maximise renewable energy generation and improve overall energy efficiency.
James Peech, Founder and Owner of The Peech Hotel, said the installation has significantly strengthened the hotel’s energy security by expanding its available power sources beyond the municipal grid and diesel generators.
The Green Way Solar designed and implemented the system to integrate with the hotel’s existing infrastructure while minimising disruption to daily operations. Richard Douglas, Owner of The Green Way Solar, said the project leverages the company’s expertise in battery energy storage to address the hotel’s operational energy requirements.
Sungrow said the project demonstrates how integrated solar and energy storage solutions can help commercial hospitality facilities improve energy resilience, reduce reliance on traditional power sources, and support long-term sustainability goals.
